Air Tools

Pneumatic tools-

Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air and the common types of these air-powered hand tools that are used in industry include buffers, nailing and stapling guns, grinders, drills, jackhammers, chipping hammers, riveting guns, sanders and wrenches.
Also, it compresses air in both downward and upward strokes.

Air compressor-

Is work by forcing air into a container and pressurizing it, and then the air is a force through an opening in the tank, where pressure build-up, think of it like an open. By one of several methods, an air compressor forces more and more air into a storage tank, increasing the pressure. When the tank's pressure reaches its engineered upper limit, the air compressor shuts off.

There are 4 different types of air compressor.

Reciprocating air compressor- Reciprocating compressors (also known as piston compressors) are generally used to move gas at increased pressure. The main elements of the compressor are one or more cylinders, and pistons which move within them, rather like in an internal combustion engine.

Centrifugal compressorCentrifugal compressors increase the kinetic energy of the gas with a high-speed impeller and then convert this energy into increased pressure in a divergent outlet passage called the diffuser. Centrifugal compressors are particularly suited for compressing large volumes of gas to moderate pressures.

Axial compressorAxial compressors are widely used in industrial gas turbine and jet engines to provide a high-pressure supply to the combustor.

Rotary screw compressorThe rotary compressor is generally used where a large volume of high-pressure fluid is required. For large industrial applications, high power air tools like jackhammers and impact wrenches, pneumatic pumps, sandblasting operations.

Here are some diagrams examples of air compressor:

Safety for Air compressor:

- Do not use gas air compressors indoors.

- Place your compressor in an ideal location that has clean, dry inlet air. Wet conditions can cause damage to your machine, as well as electrical issues.

- Perform a routine safety check before each use of your air compressor. Check hoses, ensure proper power supply, check the oil level, etc.

- Always wear eye protection and hearing protection when operating your air compressor.

- Do not add or change the oil or fuel in your compressor while the unit is running or has recently been used. Your compressor could potentially catch fire while doing so.

- Make sure your unit is plugged into a properly grounded electrical outlet. If not, you could potentially damage the electrical panel of your compressor and also cause a fire.

- Use the proper extension cord for your unit if needed. A cord that is longer than necessary can cause loss of power or damage to the unit.

Danger and Hazards:

Actually, Blowing air from a compressed air system into your mouth can cause ruptures in the lungs or stomach. Compressed air can break through the skin and cause some minor injuries, but if the air enters into the bloodstream and travels to the brain or heart can cause a heart attack or stroke.

PPE when using air tools in general:

- Glasses

- Ear Muffs

- Mask

- Safety boots

- Protective clothing

Different types of air tool connection:

  • Plug
  • Couplers
  • Colour-Coded connections

Specific safety when using-

Impact driver- Before using your impact driver, take out the instruction and safety manual provided by the manufacturer. Make sure the workspace is safe and free of clutter.

Air ratchet- Always wear safety glasses with side protectors when using an impact wrench. Never wear a tie, loose clothing, a watch, rings, or jewelry when using an air-impact wrench.

Dust off gun- Do not dust off your clothing. Do not blow at your or anyone else skin. Make sure there are no faults with the machinery and make sure to have full PPE on.

Air riveter- Always install a safety clip or retainer in order to prevent the set from being ejected during operation. Never point rivet guns toward anyone or "dead-end" them against yourself or anyone else. Noise is another issue associated with pneumatic tools.
