What is an insert shot? An insert shot is an isolated shot that focuses on a specific
detail within a scene.

What is the purpose of an insert shot? To communicate crucial narrative information
like a gun being pulled back.

What are the 3 main aspects of the insert shot? Communicate, set of object
and notice.

What 3 things help the audience feel about the insert shot? 
Composition, color and timing.

Composition of the insert shot helps with what in a film?  Camera movement, shot size
and shot angle.

Colour in the insert shot helps with what in film? Use the basic principles of colors to draw attention
to specific points within your insert shots.

How long you dwell on the insert shot helps show what?
They show close-ups to show the viewers the specific scene. To create the importance.

What is production design?  The production design is the overall visual look of the production.

What makes up production design?  It encapsulates a unifying vision for set design.


What are the 3 main things production design can help reveal? 
mood, character and themes

Points to discuss:

How does colour in film affect people? Color elicit emotions, and have a psychological
effect on people.

What are the 3 factors in determining colour?  HUE, saturation and brightness

Why is the hue in ‘The Matrix’ mostly green?  The movie takes place inside of
a digital Matrix and they associate green with code. Plus the green and the matrix
has a certain sickly quality to it, reflecting the overall state of affairs in that world.

Why do some films desaturate? They use it when the scenes are
cold, rude and gritty the look of the scenes. It has a deeply desaturating effect.


What can brightness and a lack of brightness show in a film? It shows how the tone
in the film is going based on the scene and somehow colors contrast brightness when
it shows positive or negative mood like dark show lonely or sad scene whereas light
shows happiness and good vibes.

Why is it used? Because establishing shot is the perfect opener and used for transitioning
to a new scene.

Why are establishing shot usually the most expensive? Because of the wide shots in the
scene

What is a Dutch angle? 
A dutch angle is a shot that has a noticeable tilt on the cameras x-axis.

Who and when created the dutch angle? It's created by the german expressionist in
the early 1900's.

What 3 things do directors need to consider for the Dutch angle? Identify the text, consider the moment
and enhance the moment.


What 4 things can enhance a Dutch angle?

  1. Degree of tilt
  2. Camera height
  3. Lens choice
  4. Depth of field

What are the 3 ways directors use blocking in film? space, shapes and line.

What are the 3 basic shapes for film blocking? Circle,triangle and square.

What are the emotions associated with these shapes?
Cirle- Feels safer and inclusive
Square- Create limited space boxing someone in.
Triangles- Are sharp and they feel aggressive but it also have an apex.

What two things can blocking help with? Choreography dance and ballet.

What is the effect of an over-the-shoulder shot? The effect of the over the shoulder is to connect to your partner while its over your shoulder.

What film aspect shows a disconnection between characters? Disconnect characters

How does the director of this scene show the disconnect of the characters?
Because of the dolly shot moving towards the person slowly with disconnecting your partner.

What eventually totally isolates the female character? Close up framing
